FINDING INNER PEACE • Life appears particularly stressful these days due to factors such as the impact of climate change, fires and floods, political unrest, and the COVID pandemic, to name just a few. But I am reminded of what is called the Serenity Prayer, written by the American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” We need to accept things like the weather and change what we can for the good. Some examples: Re-channel the desire for an aged steak to fresh fish to reduce cardiovascular complications and mortality. Get regular, quality sleep regardless of your daily demands. Influence politics by voting. And get vaccinated. COVID vaccines are effective, and the benefits far outweigh potential side effects. If we follow the advice in the Serenity Prayer, we can change the pandemic and save lives.
