ebook

1 of 1 copy available

There are a lot of ways to start a fire: flint and steel, matches, a magnifying glass and sunlight. However it starts, all fire needs oxygen, fuel, and heat. To some, it may almost seem like magic, but there's a complicated chemical reaction taking place when a fire is lit! Readers learn what makes fire burn simply through age-appropriate language and content. Full-color photographs complement the main content and are followed by an illustrated graphic organizer that shows the process step-by-step.

K-Gr 2-Though offering at best only partial answers to their titular questions, these primary level introductions will start newly independent readers on the road to understanding the science and technology behind everyday sights and occurrences. Bulb, for instance, describes how electricity lights up incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs, but mentions LED bulbs without explaining how they work. The big photographs and graphic images are informative and eye-catching. Despite the odd inclusion of a photo of listeria bacteria with no accompanying discussion of its danger, Food is the best of the lot as it pairs explanations of how food spoils, along with proper storage methods and a cautionary note about preservatives. VERDICT Add selectively to deepen collections supporting strong early science instruction.
