Discover the joy of cleaning with this cheery and thoughtful guide to tidying up and turning your house into a home.

Patric Richardson is known as "The Laundry Evangelist," but his genuine love for household chores extends far beyond the laundry room. His philosophy is simple: tidying up is a privilege and a task you do for those you love (including yourself), and there are a million ways to infuse joy into the everyday tasks behind maintaining a home.

House Love is his sunny guide to freshening up every inch of the house—from the entryway to the attic, the backyard to the bedroom. Patric shares his best design inspiration, DIY projects, and, of course, cleaning tips, so you can fall in love with your home all over again—or for the very first time!

This book also grants you permission to shake things up. Keep bath salts in a cookie jar? Sure. Display a surprising mishmash of pillows? You bet. Discover your personal design style? He helps you do that too. Plus, Patric's cleaning genius will change your life, with expert advice like:

  • Which three cleaning tools are worth splurging on
  • How to create a powerful (and antibacterial) cleaning spray with lemon and thyme
  • What exactly to clean when you only have 10 minutes to spare
  • Complete with fun-to-clean-to playlists, charming recipes, and even step-by-step instructions for cleaning every type of room, House Love brightens up life's most common chores. With this book, you'll learn new and novel ways to transform your home, and Patric's entertaining stories, good humor, and genuine warmth will guide you every step of the way.

If readers can't fully sign on to the idea of joyful cleaning, they will still find it hard to resist the authors' ebullience about all things dirt free. After tackling--with joy!--that pile of dirty clothes in Laundry Love (2021), Richardson and Miller take a whole-house approach, peppering the book with cleaning tasks that can be done in 10 minutes, playlists to listen to while you work, and a very pragmatic tool list, with essentials like vinegar, cheap vodka for smell reduction, and rags upon rags. Going beyond the scrubbing specifics, the authors provide tips on making a living room comfortable, swapping in a new and inexpensive backsplash (removable wallpaper, for one), and toilet cleaning, with five clever tricks. There are no photos, but the prose is upbeat and (almost) inspirational, and the plentitude of simple and useful hints--like breathing life into a humdrum sofa with a variety of pillows--will help readers get into the ""time to clean"" message. Plus, as the authors reassure, "only God sees under a sofa."

Richardson (Laundry Love), a.k.a. the Laundry Evangelist, approaches house cleaning with humor and aplomb. The book opens with a "cast of characters," family members and friends he references through memories and anecdotes in each chapter's opening. Room by room, Richardson offers tips to breathe new life into a space without spending a lot or knocking down walls, such as changing the warmth of light bulbs or swapping out dish towels or drawer pulls. At first, readers might long for pictures, but that feeling fades as Richardson's engaging storytelling brings the book to life. Included are instructions for a thorough cleaning of each room plus a 10-minute version (with a curated playlist) if one is short on time (perfect for last-minute guests). The book inspires readers to discover their own design style and try new things. Don't need a dining room? Make a craft space or home office. Can't afford to wallpaper? Get a smaller amount of wallpaper and frame it. Richardson also gives guidance on the cleaning tools really needed and offers recipes for homemade cleaning solutions. VERDICT Richardson's playfulness and good humor shine in this book; he makes cleaning fun and provides excellent tips to refresh the whole house.--Erin Dagenais
