National bestselling author Taylor Anderson’s explosive WWII alternate-history series continues as a do-or-die battle is waged that risks far more than anyone bargained for.
The long-planned raid on the heart of the Grik Empire has grown more ambitious—and dangerously ill defined. Only Matthew Reddy, commander of the old destroyer USS Walker, seems focused on its original intent.
Many Lemurians see an opportunity to reconquer their sacred homeland, which was stolen long ago, and have no intention of simply striking a blow and then pulling back. Others, Lemurian and human, have their own agendas—which may not be in the best interests of the Alliance. Complicating matters further is Reddy’s suspicion that his task force is being stalked by an unknown power bent on aiding the Grik for reasons of its own.
As the raid begins and chaos reigns, Reddy has no choice but to go all-in, risking everything in a desperate act that results in a sprawling, nightmarish battle on the beaches of “Grik City,” on the very decks of Walker, and in the labyrinthine passageways of the Celestial Palace itself.
The final cost could be more than Matt Reddy—or the Alliance—can bear.

Anderson continues the dramatic saga of WWII-era humans transported to an alternate, dinosaur-populated Earth. Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Reddy leads a “Grand Alliance” of Americans and Brits with native felinoid Lemurians against the reptilian Grik, who are aided by stranded Japanese sailors. The Lemurian coalition must also tackle the human religious fanatics of the Aztec and Catholic Holy Dominion, stretching the now “world” war from the foothills of the Andes to the shores of Madagascar. As Reddy struggles with separation of military and civil authority, the Grik discover the concepts of honor and friendship. While expanding his universe with yet more mysterious arrivals and dangerous creatures, Anderson focuses clearly on the action at the heart of the war, bookending his narrative with two intense, if melodramatic, battles by land, sea, and air. As the Alliance carries the fight into enemy territory, Anderson deftly sketches in the political fighting on the home front. This capable sequel to Storm Surge will continue to keep series fans engaged.

Another (Destroyermen, 9) of Anderson's World War II alternate-history yarns (Storm Surge, 2013, etc.). Over the centuries, various groups of humans--invariably warriors, so how come there are so many women?--have arrived on an alternate Earth already inhabited by two intelligent races, the dinosaurian Grik and the catlike Lemurians. Among the immigrants are descendants of conquistadores, who formed a powerful, belligerent and bloodthirsty empire called the Holy Dominion; WWI Germans; a Czech battalion from the Russian Revolution; offshoots of a somewhat different British Empire; and mysterious skin-wearing, stone tool-equipped warriors with English accents--as well as Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Reddy, commander of the old destroyer USS Walker, and his battle group, together with various Japanese navy vessels from the same era. And the latest influx--French Nazis in a gigantic submarine, intent on sinking U.S. ships--clearly derives from an even stranger reality. A Grand Alliance has formed to battle the insensate Grik. Flushed with previous successes, Alliance Chairman Adar, a Lemurian, intends a raid on Grik-occupied Madagascar, the revered homeland of his species. Reddy is reluctant to interfere with Adar's plans even though he suspects he's making a mistake. So it proves: The raid escalates into a full-scale battle, for which Reddy's battered forces are unprepared. What might have been a wholly grim saga is lightened by the antics of chief gunner's mate Dennis Silva and his cohort. But there's a great deal of sophomoric banter to wade through before the anticipated grand battle. Anderson gives us little idea of how or why these disparate folk all ended up on this particular version of Earth, although with so many races and technologies from different worlds and epochs, it's starting to get uncomfortably overcrowded--and the characters more anonymous. An about-average addition to the series.
