In the fourth novel of New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh's Survivors' Club series, Flavian, Viscount Ponsonby, finds salvation in the love of a most unsuspecting woman ...
Flavian was devastated by his fiancée's desertion after his return home from the Napoleonic Wars. Now the woman who broke his heart is back—and everyone is eager to revive their engagement. Except Flavian, who, in a panic, runs straight into the arms of a most sensible yet enchanting young woman.
Agnes Keeping has never been in love—and never wishes to be. But then she meets the charismatic Flavian, and suddenly Agnes falls so foolishly and so deeply that she agrees to his impetuous proposal of marriage.
When Agnes discovers that the proposal is only to avenge his former love, she's determined to flee. But Flavian has no intention of letting his new bride go, especially now that he too has fallen so passionately and so unexpectedly in love.

Rosalyn Landor's expertise with the romance genre shines through this charming story. Agnes Keeping has never intended to fall in love, but that changes when the charming Flavian, Viscount Ponsonby, suddenly shows interest in her. But when Agnes learns that he has proposed only to avoid a former fiancée, she determines to flee, forcing Flavian to prove his growing love. Landor's engagement ensures that every detail of the story sounds vital, and her sensitivity to the characters keeps listeners attuned to their emotional and personal development. This is especially true of Agnes, whose most pragmatic reasoning can't hide her growing infatuation with Flavian. Though Landor's male characters seem overly emphatic in the opening scenes, they mellow out quickly, becoming both empathetic and believable. B.E.K. © AudioFile 2015, Portland, Maine

The Survivors Club is a group of seven people, six men and one woman, all of whom suffered physical and/or psychological injuries during the Napoleonic Wars and forged lifelong friendships while recovering. Flavian, Viscount Ponsonby, had head wounds and experiences memory loss and lack of emotional control. When the Survivors' annual meeting has a change of venue, Flavian has the unexpected acquaintance of an apparently trim and proper widow. A whirlwind romance leads to a hasty marriage--will this Regency couple regret at leisure at the amused expense of the ton? Rosalyn Landor's upper-crust British accent is perfect. VERDICT This terrific addition to the series (after The Escape) is recommended to those who enjoy Regency romance. ["With her classic flawless execution and insight, Balogh highlights the importance of communication and explores the true meaning of love through two emotionally scarred characters": LJ 10/15/14 starred review of the Signet: NAL pb.]--J. In Balogh’s Survivor’s Club series, six men and one woman seek recovery from the travails of the Napoleonic wars. Their close friendship and somewhat anachronistic but heartwarming mutual support helps them rebuild their lives. In this often poignant fourth entry (after The Escape), Flavian, Lord Ponsonby, is possessed of looks and fortune, but he suffered a mental breakdown after returning home from battle and was repudiated by his fiancée. While his friends have dealt with physical injuries, Flavian wrestles with unseen demons. He impulsively proposes to the quiet and calming Agnes Keeping to protect himself from being hurt again, not realizing that Agnes has fallen wholeheartedly in love with him and is determined to capture his heart. There is always great pleasure in reading a new book from Balogh, and this one is no exception. Agent: Maria Carvainis, Maria Carvainis Agency.
