Lindsey Barnes, a personal chef, is not having a good day. Leaving her favorite knife roll behind at work was so unprofessional. The plan was to dash in, grab the roll, and get out; Lindsey didn't bargain on stumbling across a murder and being the only witness who might be able to identify the culprit. When detective Jack Tucker is called to the murder scene, he is surprised to be met by hostility from Lindsey, who is in turn shocked to have come face to face with Jack again, whom she blames for her best friend Claire's death. After many hours of counselling and the tools she has in place help her deal with the loss of Claire and the other horrors Lindsey has witnessed, she is not about to let this new set of circumstances erode her confidence. However, someone thinks Lindsey knows too much, and they're trying to take her out. Jack and Lindsey must figure out the mystery and put the past behind them before the murderer claims another victim. VERDICT For fans of Patricia Bradley and Nancy Mehl, this latest page-turning thriller from Hannon (the second in the "Undaunted Courage" series, after Into the Fire) will keep readers guessing until the end.--Jane Blue

When St. Louis County Detective Jack Turner (brother of Bri Turner, featured in Into the Fire, 2023) arrives at a crime scene, he doesn't expect the cold reception he gets from the beautiful witness. Lindsey Barnes has dealt with a lot of trauma in her past, and, because of handsome Jack's involvement with an old friend, she thinks she has a good reason to dislike him. Despite a lack of leads, Lindsey and Jack's paths keep crossing because strange things keep happening to Lindsey: her car is stolen, then found a few blocks away; she is pulled underwater while rowing on the river. Lindsey's psychologist doesn't think her trauma has caused permanent damage, but as more strange things happen to her, the less Lindsey believes him. And Jack is dealing with his own grim past. The attraction between the two is palpable and irresistible, but the troubling case keeps their romance on the back burner until it's almost too late. As she did in the first ""Undaunted Courage"" novel, Hannon sprinkles in the villain's point of view to great strategic affect; once their identity is revealed, it's a real shocker. The sweet romance and suspenseful mystery elements combine seamlessly in this faith-based novel that will appeal to fans of Lynette Eason and Dee Henderson.
