Gr 4-8-Attractive projects and a clean, colorful page design will tempt readers to try out these traditional skills, which are making a comeback. While fiber arts do require an initial investment in tools and materials, those who master them will have gained the ability to apply what they have learned to other projects. However, skilled adult assistance will be needed, as techniques such as crochet, knitting, and sewing have a steep initial learning curve, and most of the projects are illustrated with just a few process photos and no diagrams. Those who already know the basics will enjoy making needle-felted sushi magnets and embroidered bookmarks, but libraries may wish to stock books with more detailed instructions for novices.

Grades 4-6 For elementary-age children interested in fiber art, but with still-developing fine motor skills, learning to work with simple punch needles may be the answer. This entry in the Cool Fiber Art series first introduces punch needle, from identifying the tools and terms, to learning to read and follow a pattern, to selecting fabric and thread. Step one is correctly positioning the fabric in the hoop. Learning how to hold the needle may be the most disconcertingit looks like one would grab it like a pencil, but it must be held vertically to punch. What children and adults will soon realize is that no design emerges as they stitch, since they are working on the underside, not the top. Once they've mastered the basics, learners can try the five patterns shown in the book. Numbered steps for each pattern are given; numbers with accompanying illustrations are bold-faced. Guidelines for adults are thorough, but would be more prominent if in an opposing colored font. A second reading by adults and children together will make this helpful book even more useful.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
