Before the Tribulation, before the Rapture, before there was a legacy that could be left behind . . . there was Jesus. Now the authors of the phenomenal Left Behind series introduce The Jesus Chronicles, four books that individually and collectively paint a vivid portrait of the Prince of Peace told in the voices of those who knew Him best: the Gospel writers, John, Mark, Matthew, and Luke.
The year is A.D. 95, and John, the one whom Jesus called “beloved,” is the last of the twelve apostles still alive. Now nearing ninety, John is still committed to spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. When a renegade begins misleading the masses with dangerous, heretical teachings, John is called by God to write a Gospel to show that Jesus was in fact the Son of God.
Recalling his time with Jesus, John brings to life the miracles and messages of the Man who would change the course of history. Here is a thrilling account of the life of the Man who came to fulfill the prophecies of the Old Testament and to save all of humankind, and of the disciple who was the last eyewitness to Jesus’ glory. JOHN’S STORY brings to life the most important events in human history and also includes the very words that John wrote–words that continue to bring followers to Jesus every day.

With their wildly popular Left Behind thrillers, LaHaye and Jenkins took the Christian fiction genre to new heights of mainstream success, but also sparked renewed debate among evangelicals concerning End Times theology. Now, they reunite to undertake the Jesus Chronicles, a four-book series of historical novels profiling the lives of the Gospel writers: John, Mark, Matthew, and Luke. This first installment recounts the personal and spiritual journey of the only one of the original apostles who died from old age rather than martyrdom. Robinson Dean brings an appropriately deep and sober tone to his duties as narrator, especially in his portrayal of the elderly John's exhaustive efforts to leave a written record of both his first-person experiences and prophetic visions. The authors steep their storytelling in a conservative interpretation of scripture that may not appeal evenly across the broader spectrums of Christian theology, but they provide some engaging human drama. The audiobook also includes Dean's reading of the complete texts of all five New Testament books for which John is credited (John's Gospel, his three Epistles and Revelation). Simultaneous release with the Putnam hardcover.

Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins's new work is not meant to be an examination of the life of the longest-living disciple of Jesus Christ. The authors of the popular Left Behind series ask listeners to accept the work for what it is--a novel. Reader Robertson Dean is the best thing about the book. His measured voice and soft tones sound like the best of the narrators of the religious movies of the 1960s. His is a trustworthy voice, a fatherly voice, amazingly gentle yet harsh when necessary. Expect more and you might be disappointed. M.S. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine
