A body in an Appalachian cave leads a sheriff's deputy down a twisted path: "Brynn and her war-injured dog are characters readers will root for" (Suzanne Chazin, author of the Georgia Skeehan series).

Not long after donning the uniform of the McCreary County Sheriff's Department in Bone Gap, Tennessee, ex-marine Brynn Callahan faces her first official homicide. On a cold February morning, a cross-country skier stumbles across the mutilated body of a young woman. Sent to investigate, Brynn is shocked when she recognizes the victim as a fellow Irish Traveller, Maura Keene.

Maura held a solid standing both within the Travellers' insular community and among the settled townspeople—a fact that makes her murder all the more disturbing to Brynn, who also straddles the two worlds. After her trained K-9, Wilco, digs up human bones, and then a scrap of paper scrawled with arcane Latin phrases is uncovered, Brynn finds evidence leading her to question those closest to her—and closing the case becomes a deeply personal matter.

While trying to suppress local superstitions and prejudices, Brynn discovers Maura was keeping a dangerous secret. And as the bones Wilco found are analyzed by forensics, Brynn harbors a suspicion that she knows who they belong to. Still struggling with PTSD, Brynn must put her career and life at risk to find justice for a woman not unlike herself—haunted by her past and caught in a vicious cycle she may never escape.

A harrowing tale of murder, bigotry, and redemption.Brynn Callahan and her cadaver dog, Wilco, were both badly injured by an IED and invalided out of the Marines. They've returned to her grandmother's home in Bone Gap, Tennessee, a stultifying place she had been trying to escape. Born into the community of Irish Travellers in Bone Gap, Brynn has faced prejudice her whole life and is fiercely loyal to her clan. Since helping Sheriff Pusser solve a crime (Splintered Silence, 2017), she's taken a job with the sheriff's department and now feels the scorn of both the locals and the Travellers, who consider her a traitor. Aided by Wilco, she rediscovers the body of a girl first found in a cave by a skier, brutally stabbed, surrounded by slaughtered chickens and pagan symbols, and identified as the 17-year-old Traveller Maura Keene. Maura's mother and twin brother, Eddie, are devastated. They hadn't missed Maura because they thought she was staying over with a friend while they shopped for a dress for Maura's upcoming wedding to Nevan Meath. Maura was pregnant, but Nevan wasn't the father, although he is the leading suspect in her death. While the sheriff's department is quick to blame Travellers for local crimes, Brynn focuses on the mayor's son, the putative father of Maura's child. Meanwhile, she continues to fight demons of her own. In constant pain from her wounds, she drinks heavily and is addicted to pain pills, relying on Wilco, her only devoted friend, to keep her going. Refusing to accept Nevan's guilt, she turns up new clues, including Maura's diary, and relives painful memories buried in her past. As her life hangs in the balance, she realizes there's no easy road to absolution for her sins.A striking mystery whose twists and turns are complemented by raw descriptions of prejudice, physical pain, and the horrors of addiction.

At the start of Furlong’s enthralling sequel to 2017’s Splintered Silence, Bone Gap, Tenn., Marine vet and new sheriff’s deputy Brynn Callahan and her human remains detection dog, Wilco, join the search for a mutilated body spotted by a cross-country skier in a cave off the Appalachian trail. Inside the cave, Brynn recognizes the victim as 17-year-old Maura Keene, a fellow Irish Traveller or Pavee, who has a curious stab wound in her chest. In the subsequent investigation, it’s up to Brynn to try to bridge the gap between the police and the Traveller community, who have a long history of mutual distrust. The stakes rise as the inquiry leads directly to a powerful family and even to her own community. The prickly Brynn is physically and emotionally scarred from her time in Iraq as part of the “bone patrol” working with Wilco to clear the dead from the battlefield. She often turns to pills and alcohol, but her desire to do the right thing is what drives her. Furlong pairs flawed, fascinating Brynn and her extraordinary dog with an emotionally resonant mystery.
