Like millions of people around the world, Jeremy Logan (famed enigmalogist, or investigator of unexplained things) has grown to rely on his incredible new tech device. Made by Chrysalis, the global multibillion dollar tech company, the small optical device connects people in a stunning new way, tapping into virtual reality for the first time on a wide scale.
And yet, when Logan is summoned by Chrysalis to investigate a disturbing anomaly in the massive new product rollout, Logan is shocked to see the true scope of the massive company. He also quickly realizes that something in Chrysalis’s technology is very wrong, and could be potentially devastating. The question is what, and where, is the danger coming from? In Lincoln Child’s wildly inventive new novel, high tech comes to life alongside the myriad dangers it poses, making for one of Child’s most infectious, entertaining thrillers to date.

In bestseller Child’s strong sixth thriller featuring Jeremy Logan (after 2017’s Full Wolf Moon), the enigmalogist, who solves “problems nobody has encountered before,” gets the challenge of his life. Claire Asperton, general counsel to the Chrysalis Management Group, is concerned about the bizarre death of a board member of the pioneering tech company. Russell Spearman, a producer at Chrysalis Film Studios, collapsed on a glass table, fatally impaling himself on its shards. Asperton then received an anonymous message reading: “Spearman Was the First. No Accident. The Second Will Drop the Day After Tomorrow.” The threat comes at an especially fraught time for Chrysalis, which is about to roll out a breakthrough in virtual reality, a launch imperiled after a second board member dies. With no demand attached to the warning, Logan must use every bit of his formidable intellect to figure out what’s going on and avoid more casualties. As Child masterfully ratchets up the tension, he makes even secondary figures feel real enough for readers to worry about their survival prospects. Michael Crichton fans will find a lot to like. Agent: Eric Simonoff, WME. -

Johnathan McClain's gravelly voice is perfect for narrating this thriller laced with descriptions of high-tech computing. Chrysalis hires deep-voiced Jeremy Logan to foil a blackmailer who has no qualms about murdering--first, corporate officers and then, customers--to get his money on the eve of the launch of a virtual-reality invention that will turn the world on its head. McClain acts out each scene, every twist and turn. He swiftly shifts from the accents of high-strung programmers to those of Mossad-trained security agents and cool, calm lawyers. The action is nonstop, and the killings are bloody, but nothing compares to the virtual-reality shopping trip and the mind-bending, breathlessly enacted sci-fi scenes set inside the computer. M.B.K.
