All twenty-seven-year-old Kristi Bentz needs to fulfill her writing dreams is one case that will take her to the top. When she learns that four girls have disappeared from All Saints College in two years, Kristi decides to enroll and re-trace their steps. The once-stodgy Catholic school now boasts edgy professors and provocative classes, and there are whispers of a campus inner-circle whose members engage in dark rituals to which only the elite have access . . .
All four girls were "lost souls"—troubled, vulnerable, with no one to care or come looking for them when they disappeared. The police think they're runaways, but Kristi senses there's something that links them—something terrifying.
As Kristi delves deeper into her investigation, she gets the feeling she's being watched, followed—studied, even. Then the bodies start turning up in ways that frighten even hardened cops like Bentz and his partner, Reuben Montoya. And Kristi realizes she is playing a game with a killer who has selected her for membership in a cult of death from which there will be no escape . . .

Kristi Bentz, having recovered from her last encounter with a sadistic monster in bestseller Jackson's Absolute Evil
, faces an equally terrifying ordeal in this frantic paranormal thriller. Four female students associated with a vampire cult have gone missing at Baton Rouge's All Saints College, where Kristi is pursuing a journalism degree and plans to write about true crime. Kristi by chance rents an apartment once tenanted by one of the missing girls and begins investigating the case, thinking it might make a great first book. Kristi's old college sweetheart, Jay McKnight, provides an unexpected surprise (and protection) when he shows up as the fill-in for one of Kristi's professors. Not too surprisingly, “Vlad,” the mysterious serial killer, sets his sights on Kristi. Adding hot sauce to the blood bath is Kristi's new supernatural ability to detect anyone marked for a life-or-death struggle when she sees a person go from living color to deadly gray or black-and-white. Jackson peppers the action with insights into the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies trying to solve crimes in post-Katrina Louisiana. -

Reader Joyce Bean, who has also directed many audiobooks, does her best to add some subtlety and strength to Jackson's latest, but it's basically an uphill effort. The author's plotting and prose style remain workmanlike, and no amount of vocal skill can change that. Fans of Jackson's previous bestselling suspense novels will find her new effort more of the same. Kristi Bentz, a wounded 27-year-old who has already survived attacks by a serial killer, returns to her New Orleans college to find out why some of the current female students have gone missing. Kristi is determined to succeed as a true crime writer, although her father, a New Orleans police detective, warns her against it. Bean gives Kristi and the All Saints students understated Southern accents that help listeners easily identify various characters. Simultaneous release with the Kensington hardcover (Reviews, Feb. 25).
