Obadiah Demurral no longer wants to worship God . . . he wants to be God!
Vicar Obadiah Demurral isn’t satisfied running the affairs of his village–now he wants to control the world. And if his plan works, he will obtain a weapon so powerful, even God and his angels will fall down at his feet. Demurral will stop at nothing, and as a shadowmancer–a sorcerer who speaks to the dead–he even commands restless souls to
do his bidding.
Who will stand against him? Raphah has come a long distance to reclaim the ancient relic Demurral has stolen–dangerously volatile in the wrong hands–but Raphah is young. Even younger are Thomas and Kate, accidentally drawn into this war between good and evil. Their struggle against Demurral will bring them face-to-face with the powers of darkness in an epic battle.

Good and evil do battle in a novel that uses Christian symbolism to tell its story. Graeme Malcolm's wonderful British accent is enough to send chills up the listener's spine as Vicar Obadiah Demurral strikes a bargain with the devil himself to rule the world. Impeding him, of course, is a trio of "goodness"--a brave boy, a feisty girl, and a mystical African--who are aided by Heaven itself. Malcolm's narration does justice to the myriad ghastly creatures from beyond the grave who are thrown in the path of the heroes as they try to save the world from domination by the forces of evil. A deep voice that moves easily from whisper or hiss to loud rumble is at the heart of Malcolm's fine portrayal of evil vicar Obadiah Demurral, a megalomaniac intent on using magic and otherworldly powers (such as speaking to the dead) to take down God and rule the world. When he's not voicing Demurral, Malcolm employs a comfortably swift narration that sweeps readers away to the dark, craggy moors of 18th-century England—a setting whose creepy mood is emphasized by ominous strains of string music throughout. The requisite fantastic battle between good and evil ensues: young friends and orphans Tom and Kate join an African named Raphah to stop Deumurral's wicked mission. Taylor, a vicar himself who is making his writing debut, offers plenty of action, suspense and mystical creatures, all sure to hold appeal for fans of the fantasy genre—especially as performed in Malcolm's smooth and captivating style. Ages 12-up.
