When murder mars the grand opening for Lila Macapagal’s aunties’ new laundromat, she will have to air out all the dirty laundry in Shady Palms to catch a killer…
Lila Macapagal's godmothers April, Mae, and June—AKA the Calendar Crew—are celebrating the opening of their latest joint business venture, a new laundromat, to much fanfare (and controversy). However, what should’ve been a joyous occasion quickly turns into a tragedy when they discover the building has been vandalized—and the body of Ninang April’s niece, recently arrived from the Philippines, next to a chilling message painted on the floor. The question is, was the message aimed at the victim or Lila's gossipy godmothers, who have not-so-squeaky-clean reputations?
With Ninang April falling apart from grief and little progress from the Shady Palms Police Department in this slippery case, it’s up to Lila and her network to find justice for the young woman.
The Calendar Crew have stuck their noses into everybody’s business for years, but now the tables are turned as Lila must pry into the Calendar Crew’s lives to figure out who has a vendetta against the (extremely opinionated yet loving) aunties and stop them before they strike again.

Danice Cabanela's exuberant narration enhances Manansala's fourth delicious mystery featuring Filipino cuisine. Lila Macapagal and her godmothers, April, Mae, and June, along with a quirky assortment of regulars, solve murders between bouts of unrestrained and joyful eating. The godmothers' newest business venture, a laundromat in Shady Palms, seems to be annoying someone who has spray-painted the property with the words "MIND YOUR BUSINESS." That incident is followed by the murder of a young family member. Cabanela infuses each of the characters with enthusiasm. She is particularly strong in scenes involving food, and she makes the character interactions fun. Light listening at its most delectable. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

Manansala's fourth installment in the "Tita Rosie's Kitchen Mystery" series (following Blackmail and Bibingka) shifts the focus from Lila to her godmothers April, Mae, and June, also known as the Calendar Crew. Lila's aunties are opinionated, gossipy, and loving; more than anything, they just want to open their new laundromat. However, before the grand opening, they discover the corpse of Ninang, April's visiting niece, next to a threatening message. This time, instead of defending her family from false accusations, Lila needs to find the killer before they harm the people she loves. Her new perspective is the essence of the novel, where all of Lila's relationships and goals are maturing. She's mended old grudges, has healthy communication with her partner, runs a successful business, and learns from ex-detective Park. Filipino American actor and narrator Danice Cabanela skillfully crafts distinctive Filipino accents for characters and creates character portraits that convey a wealth of information; age, upbringing, education, and personality are all instantly recognizable when characters speak. As Lila's community continues to grow, Cabanela ensures that everyone in Shady Palms has a voice. VERDICT Manansala and Cabanela excel at creating a welcoming community that mystery lovers will want to visit again and again.--Matthew Galloway
