Life & Changing Times at In-Fisherman • There’s a slight shift in the breeze at In-Fisherman that we might take a moment to note. In terms of staffing, Managing Editor Dr. Rob Neumann retired this past November after 21 years of distinctive service, in charge of all things monetary (it’s what managing editors do) and the final edits of articles. The end look of each article and column, how they read, and the accuracy of the information, both from a field perspective and on science fronts, fell to Neumann, who was well equipped to handle the details.

“STICKING” COLDWATER LARGEMOUTHS • In Largemouth Bass—An In-Fisherman Hand-book of Strategies (1990), the Coldwater Period is described as a transition time when large-mouths move from deep, winter locations toward shallow prespawn staging and spawning areas. This phase typically sees water temperatures rising from the low 40s into the 50s.

Seems Like Far— SMALLMOUTHS ACROSS THE SEASONS • A long line of boats stretched behind us into a gray chiaroscuro, just after dawn. A frigid wind blew at 36 mph out of the southeast, as it had all night. The blast-off point approached. My partner, Tim Dawidiuk, stared at me. “Do we want to win, or just go fishing?

FORWARD FACING into the FUTURE • If Tom Huynh’s been fishing for walleyes in all the wrong places with all the wrong presentations, it’s news to the fish. Now five years into a tournament career front-loaded with 1sts, the Western Minnesota based angler with the fitting last name (Huynh sounds like “win”) has wowed everyone who’s witnessed his live sonar sorcery, “Huynhing” the last two National Walleye Tour Championships and fortifying an already crowded trophy case.

Early Season Pike On The Yukon– LAND OF THE GIANTS • This past June, we completed an amazing In-Fisherman TV trip by catching multiple 50-inch-plus pike from Alaska’s fabled Yukon River Drainage, near Holy Cross, about an hour’s float plane flight west of Anchorage.

Formulas for Growing Jumbo Perch • Slab is maybe my favorite word in the fishing lexicon. Jumbo is a close second, the term used by some folks to denote double-XL versions of both yellow perch and shrimp, two essential components of a balanced diet, at least here in Wisconsin. A fat 10-incher pulled through the ice seems like a jumbo in my central Wisconsin neighborhood, but drive just over an hour to Green Bay and that same fish is a fairly mundane addition to the bucket.

Carp-Catfish Conundrums & A “SILVER” LINING • At least fifteen years ago , crazy carp videos started popping up everywhere on YouTube, views running well into the millions. We watched, bemused, as overloaded jonboats full of Illinois River warriors armed with football helmets, shoulder pads, baseball bats, and fishing nets attempted to invent some on-water version of whack-a-mole. Some of them even took the opportunity to pack 12-gauge shotguns and invent a form of fishy trapshooting.

Locked-In Fine Tuned Spot-Lock Strategies Today • Spot-lock has been part of the fishing lexicon long enough that we rarely stop to think about what it’s really doing for us. For most anglers, it’s a...
