Welcome

We love October • There are so many glorious things about this month, from late flowers to laden fruit trees. It is the season of custardy crumbles and light knitwear. There are lots of poems about glorious October, but many of them are oddly out of date. They talk about falling leaves, but such is the state of our climate there are not many of those so far. While there is a hint of colour, we will have to wait until November for the full glory. In the meantime, I am off on the endless (and usually disappointing) search for the perfect pear.

Expert’s choice Shrubby salvias • Long-flowering, with a wide range of colours and pollinators love them. So what’s not to like? asks Graham Rice

FREE 15 Narcissus ‘Tête-à-tête’ • with orders of Allium Artisan Mix or Double Tulips Saver Collection

The Full Monty • More than just a barrier between neighbouring properties, hedges are valuable havens for wildlife and can be transformed into breathtaking works of art, says Monty

Have your say • The view from your side of the fence

Save £50 on holidays to the Italian Lakes or Tuscany

Over the fence • Should washing lines be included in garden design?

Digging deeper • Putting the spotlight on the biggest issues in gardening today

2 for 1 Gardens Beauty and bounty • Celebrate the harvest season and nurture your curiosity by visiting our selection of gardens offering autumnal produce, using your 2 for 1 Gardens entry card from the May issue

Container of the month • Combine chrysanthemums, ornamental cabbages, heather and pumpkins for a seasonal doorstep display

Enjoy 3 issues for £5 • Subscribe to BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine and get your first 3 issues for only £5†, then pay £27.60 every 6 issues thereafter, saving 32% on the usual price

Tulipa sylvestris • Cel Robertson suggests a deliciously scented addition to your spring garden – the woodland or wild tulip. They look superb naturalised in lawns or swaying under the light shade of a tree

TULIP TRIUMPH • As one of his best-loved blooms, tulips are in abundance at Longmeadow. Monty shares his favourite varieties and how he uses them

Hedges to bet on • Hedges are assets to any garden – Frances Tophill explains how to choose, plant and look after them

Why choose a living boundary? • Not only are hedges an attractive alternative to stark fencing, they also protect and provide for humans and the creatures that share our gardens. Here are some of the ways:

GUIDE TO GROWING HEDGES

HURRAH for AUTUMN • This is a great time of year to prepare your garden for the months ahead, from bulb planting and mulching to planting shrubs and trees, says Adam Frost
